Metallurgy Services & Education

Tap Our Expertise

Looking for technical service? Want to build your knowledge base? Our metallurgists and technical staff share their knowhow to help your steel perform better. We work as your partners—in the lab, in the classroom, and on your line.

Training Topics

We cover topics from the basics to the latest.

We partner with customers to lead courses on a wide variety of topics, depending on the experience, skill level, and interest of the teams we’re training. For beginners or non-engineering staff, we can provide fundamental understanding of steel and how we work with it. For your more advanced team members, we’ll share what’s new in steel chemistry, processing, product development, and more… or even customize a course to spur innovation.

Topics covered in a typical metallurgy education class include:

  • Ironmaking
  • Steelmaking: Integrated and Mini-Mill
  • Continuous Casting
  • Hot Rolling
  • Steel Processing: Pickling, Cold Rolling, Annealing, Galvanizing, Slitting, Tension * Leveling
  • Steel Fabrication: Forming, Heat Treatment, Joining
  • Steel Specifications & Grades
  • Test Methods
  • Applications

Testing & Analysis

The proof is in the performance.

You can tap our testing and analytical expertise for new products, materials-related problem solving, quality assurance, supplier trials, and specialty solutions. We have a full range of in-house metallurgical testing capabilities, and trusted partners for welding and forming.

Metallurgical Lab

Put our lab to the test.

Our advanced metals evaluation laboratory is available to support your product and process development. Testing helps predict the performance of a material before it runs live in your facility, using chemistries, mechanical properties analysis, tensile test, hardness tests, and imaging. Our lab is accredited through ISO and QS certifications.

Accreditations include OHSAS 18001 (health and safety), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and ISO/TS 16949 (quality).

Vision Systems

Improving how we improve our own product quality.

Worthington process metallurgists and quality engineers employ high-tech vision systems on a variety of equipment such as on pickle lines, cold mills, and galvanizing lines. This gives us a wealth of reliable data to continuously improve product quality and guide our suppliers on needed improvements.

  • Data for all coils—regardless of the vision system manufacturer—links into our data lake for comparison and manipulation
  • Data is aggregated by alloy or supplier, to find areas of focus and opportunity
  • Further data analytics tools include everything from analysis of heat mapping data that compare coils by defect or location, to defect trending by supplier
  • Information helps us evaluate how suppliers are performing and partner with them on continuous improvement
